Medical Laboratory Technician - PMOB Clinical Lab - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Non-Union)
About the Role
The Tech-Med Lab assists the Clinical Laboratory Scientist by performing routine specimen processing and analysis under direct supervision. The Technician may perform routine automated analysis, instrument checks, calibration, maintenance, and quality control under the direct supervision of a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist on duty. Duties also involve clerical functions such as answering telephone inquiries and communicating with outside clients as well as reference laboratories utilized by the hospital.
Responsibilities
- Report directly to the CLS on duty and assist licensed personnel in testing procedures under supervision.
- Perform daily checks and maintenance on laboratory instruments.
- Conduct a variety of manual, semi-automated, and automated biochemical, hematological, microbiological, and/or blood bank analysis on patient specimens while maintaining high accuracy and productivity.
- Recognize normal, abnormal, and critical results and take appropriate action, including considerations for patient age.
- Demonstrate proficiency in clerical and computer functions for communicating results and carrying out additional clinical and clerical duties.
- Ensure results are available within defined turnaround time (TAT) guidelines.
- Communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, guests, and hospital clinical staff.
- Participate in the Department’s Quality Assurance Program and continuing education sessions.
- Monitor supply levels, communicate supply needs to the supervisor, and assist in inventory management.
- Adhere to safety and infection control guidelines using personal protective equipment as required.
- Display flexibility to cover the lab in emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
- Obtain specimens from designated patients, including venipuncture or capillary methods, with appropriate consideration for patient age.
- Maintain an English-speaking environment in all work areas.
- Receive and screen specimens for acceptability based on established guidelines.
- Process, distribute, or package all specimens received (except Blood Bank and Anatomic Pathology samples).
- Handle inquiries for lab results, specimen status, and general departmental information.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the CLS or supervisor.
- Adhere to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year of experience in a Clinical Laboratory in an Acute Care Facility setting or equivalent.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service behavior.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized/technical training or successful completion of Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program.
- Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Chemistry (ASCP) certification.
Required Licenses/Certifications
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – if no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date (required within LA City only).
Pay
The hourly rate range for this position is $27.45 - $46.68.
