About the role

The Medical Laboratory Technician, Intern is a student who works in those laboratory departments where they have successfully completed a clinical rotation at a Singing River Health System laboratory.

  • Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing.
  • Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Verifies accuracy of results before reporting; reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Performs needed maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment as appropriate; troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur.
  • Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control/plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.

All performed duties are expected to be in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures and policies, accreditation organizations, and governing guidance and publications for health care employees.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled and has a B or better average in a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Associate Degree program.
  • Must obtain certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology or comparable agency upon completion of the MLT or CS program.
  • Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days).
  • Training and experience meeting the requirements of the clinical laboratory rotation for the educational degree being obtained.
  • Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette.
  • Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (keyboard proficiency) and other office technology (telephone, fax, etc.), MS Outlook, and Word.
  • Must be able to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply appropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages.
  • Job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area – with the employee providing their own transportation.

Physical Demands

  • Work is moderately active: involves sitting with frequent requirements to move about the office, facility, and travel to another facility within the SRHS service area.
  • Involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum, and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease.
  • Involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as a computer keyboard.
  • Must be able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Requires close visual acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, e.g., shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material.
  • Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue.
  • Must be able to work assigned schedules with the understanding that changes may be instituted according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts, or weekends.

  • Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.
  • Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required.
  • Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respectable working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations.
