About the role

The Medical Laboratory Technician, Intern is a student who works in those laboratory departments where he/she has successfully completed a clinical rotation at a Singing River Health System laboratory.

• Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing.
• Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Verifies accuracy of results before reporting; reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
• Performs needed maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment as appropriate; troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur.
• Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control/plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens.
• Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.

All performed duties are expected to be in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures and policies, accreditation organizations, and governing guidance and publications for healthcare employees.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in and maintaining a B or better average in a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Associate Degree program.
• Must obtain certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology or comparable agency upon completion of the MLT or CLS program.
• Must complete de-escalation training by the end of position orientation (90 days).
• Training and experience meeting the requirements of the clinical laboratory rotation for the educational degree being obtained.

Physical Demands

• Work is moderately active: involves sitting with frequent requirements to move about the office, facility, and travel to another facility within the SRHS service area.
• Exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
• Using many physical motions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum, and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease.
• Using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as a computer keyboard.
• Perceiving the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; making fine discriminations in sound.
• Close visual acuity and the ability to adjust focus, such as shifting gaze from a computer monitor to printed material.
• Able to be active for extended periods without experiencing undue fatigue.
• Able to work assigned schedules with the understanding that changes may be made according to hospital needs, including off days, shifts, or weekends.

• Able to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply professional skills to a patient population of all ages.
• Travel throughout the SRHS service area, with the employee providing his/her own transportation.
