Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Technician, Intern is a student who works in laboratory departments they have successfully completed a clinical rotation at a Singing River Health System (SRHS) laboratory. They evaluate specimens for acceptability, perform accurate and appropriate testing, verify results, report them promptly, and maintain and calibrate instruments as necessary. They also troubleshoot issues and perform phlebotomy procedures as needed.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Associate Degree program with a B or better average.
  • Must obtain certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology or a comparable agency upon completion of the MLT or CLS program.
  • Must complete de-escalation training by the end of position orientation (90 days).
  • Experience meeting the requirements of the clinical laboratory rotation for the educational degree being obtained.

Physical Demands

  • Moderately active work involving sitting and moving around the office and facility.
  • Exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or operate standard office equipment.
  • Using many physical motions in performing daily work activities.
  • Exposure to body fluids, sputum, and tissues that may carry the hazard of infectious disease.
  • Repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Close visual acuity and ability to adjust focus between computer monitors and printed materials.
  • Ability to work extended periods without undue fatigue.
  • Ability to work various shifts and weekends as needed.

  • Proficient computer skills, including keyboard proficiency and MS Outlook and Word.
  • Appropriate clinical judgment and professional skills for a patient population of all ages.
  • Travel throughout the SRHS service area with personal transportation provided.
