Medical Laboratory Technician - Core lab

Full time (80 hours biweekly) on the evening shift (2:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m.), including every third weekend and alternating holidays.

About the role

Performs a variety of technical and general duties within one or more laboratory divisions.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine and/or specialized specimen collection, processing, and testing procedures with supervision as appropriate.
• Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision; records results.
• May operate a variety of laboratory instruments.
• Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.
• Makes periodic observations of materials derived from cultures and identifies types of bacterial colonies by determination of cultural requirements and biochemical reactions in chemically-defined media.
• May group or type blood of donors and recipients; may determine compatibility of donor blood products with intended recipient.
• Counts, describes morphology of, and performs studies on blood and other body fluid cells; performs coagulation testing.
• May perform chemical and/or immunological tests to identify and/or quantitate substances found in blood and other body fluids.
• Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.

• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population; assesses and interprets patient age-specific data and provides appropriate, age-specific treatment.
• Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
• Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor, and staff safety by complying with all applicable safety regulations, learning the impact of medical errors, reporting actual and potential errors, and participating in safety education programs.
• Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
• Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
• Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Requirements

• Certificate program in Health Science Lab Technology, or
• Associate’s degree with completion of an MLT program, and
• College diploma (required by CAP if the field of study is indicated on the diploma), or
• College transcript.
• 1 year of relevant experience.
• Certified Medical Laboratory Technician – ASCP or AMT upon hire.
• Completion of medical laboratory technology training or military advanced specialist training upon hire.

About the Team

WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, celebrating over 100 years of community care, is a nationally recognized acute care community hospital serving more than 100,000 residents from the greater Adams County and northern Maryland area. The hospital offers services including neurosciences, orthopedics, oncology and infusion, OB/GYN, and interventional heart and vascular care.
