Medical Laboratory Technician

Fairview is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician for M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN. This is a 0.7 FTE position with 56 hours per 2-week pay period on the evening shift (2:30pm-11pm), including every other weekend and rotating holidays. Eligible for a $700 shift incentive bonus paid out every 6 months (pro-rated by FTE).

About the Role

The Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital performs clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection and processing. The hospital serves a variety of pediatric and adult patients and operates the busiest Emergency Department in the system. The laboratory team consists of approximately 90 employees, including five pathologists, and is staffed 24/7.

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) functions independently in performing major work responsibilities of professional laboratory practice, including complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing. The MLT acts as a resource for problem resolution, correlates data based on clinical knowledge, and collaborates with laboratory customers to promote satisfaction.

Responsibilities

• Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens and prioritize work:
  • Collects and processes biological specimens following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Verifies patient identity and specimen integrity before testing.
  • Determines priority of specimen testing and procurement.
• Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing:
  • Conducts waived, moderate, or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88 in areas such as Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, and EKG.
  • Operates laboratory instrumentation and information systems according to procedure.
  • Performs and documents maintenance procedures and maintains adequate supplies.
  • Recognizes and resolves problems or seeks assistance for unusual situations.
• Evaluates testing results for accuracy and appropriate intervention:
  • Determines if test results fall within normal parameters and reporting protocols, including age-specific reference ranges.
  • Correlates data based on clinical knowledge and technical expertise.
  • Rechecks abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results and communicates critical results to caregivers.
  • Resolves incongruent results by obtaining information from caregivers.
• Demonstrates commitment to Laboratory Quality Assurance, Performance Improvement, and Compliance:
  • Documents deviations, reagent checks, and calibrator checks.
  • Recognizes and communicates values/trends exceeding QC decision levels.
  • Participates in performance improvement programs by collecting data and implementing action steps.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agency policies.
• Orients and mentors new employees and students:
  • Trains individuals in testing methodology, instrumentation, and information systems.
  • Checks work prior to release and completes training checklists/evaluations.
  • Reports progress and problems to supervisor/manager.

Requirements

• Associate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field, including lab practicum, or equivalent routes to qualify as high-complexity testing personnel per CLIA ’88.
• One of the following:
  • Associate or higher degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science/technology from an accredited institution (transcript required).
  • Associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours of academic credit with 6 semester hours in biology and 6 in chemistry (transcript required).
  • Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course plus an associate or higher degree or 60 semester hours with 6 semester hours in biology and 6 in chemistry (transcript required).
• Possess or be eligible to receive HHS-approved laboratory certification (ASCP, ASCPi, AMT, or AAB - MLT) within 1 year.

Pay

Compensation is determined by factors such as skills, knowledge, education, experience, and market conditions. The organization prioritizes pay equity and considers internal team equity when making offers. Hiring at the maximum of the range is not typical. Eligible roles may include a sign-on bonus based on approved programs at the time of offer.
