Medical Laboratory Technician
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs testing across all areas of the laboratory and helps ensure laboratory equipment and systems are operating effectively. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently, particularly during on-call hours, while maintaining compliance with CLIA regulations and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory testing, specimen processing, and result reporting according to established procedures
- Maintain quality control documentation and proficiency testing records
- Identify, troubleshoot, correct, or report issues affecting test performance
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety, regulatory, and accreditation requirements
- Participate in quality assurance activities, peer review, and competency assessments
- Absorb training students and new staff members
- Collaborate effectively with providers, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals
- Participate in on-call rotations and hospital education programs
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Education: Associate Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
- Certification: Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) through ASCP or NCA, Current CPR certification
- Experience: Previous laboratory experience preferred but not required.
- Skills & Abilities: Basic computer proficiency, Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, Ability to work independently and prioritize responsibilities, Excellent communication and teamwork skills, Commitment to accuracy, accountability, and patient safety
On-Call Responsibilities
This position participates in an on-call rotation to help provide 24-hour laboratory services for our patients. Employees assigned to on-call duty receive additional compensation for scheduled on-call coverage and premium pay when called in to work, in accordance with the applicable union agreement.
