About the role

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing and evaluating various complex chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunologic, and immunochemical tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by physicians.

Responsibilities

• Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of body fluids using manual and automated instrumentation.
• Accurately and completely report results of tests and procedures.
• Recognize and resolve problems, troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, and use alternative methods when appropriate.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, perform and record instrument checks, quality control procedures, calibration, and other maintenance as required.
• Meet established turnaround time for routine and STAT tests.
• Access, input, and retrieve information from the EMR.
• Use sound judgment and generally accepted medical technology principles when assessing the reliability of results generated.
• Communicate with physicians regarding callback values and problems.
• Assist with specimen processing, processing orders, and drawing outpatients.
• Perform glucometer runs.
• Adhere to lab cleaning schedule and maintain appropriate logs of these activities.
• Process reference laboratory requests and reports.
• Receive and register via EMR lab requests and specimens from outside sources and deliver to the proper laboratory section.

Requirements

• Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician or an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience making the employee eligible to take the registry exam.
• Registration by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists within one year of hire.
• Promptness in answering phone requests, instrument, and outpatient alarms.
• Promptness and efficiency in reporting results of laboratory findings via computer, paper, or "call back" results if indicated.
• Ability to work independently, react calmly and effectively in emergency situations, and meet deadlines required by "stats" and routines.
• Maintain ethical conduct and keep confidential personal and medical information about patients.
• Plan, prioritize, and respond to information in an appropriate time frame.

Schedule

• 1st and 2nd shifts available.
• Varied start times on 1st or 2nd shift.
• 28 – 40 hours per week.
