Medical Laboratory Scientist, Sr.

About the role

This position supports the San Antonio, TX location. The Medical Laboratory Technician Sr is responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures, including moderate and high-complexity laboratory tests. The role involves specimen collection, adherence to quality assurance and safety policies, and support of the US Oncology Compliance Program.

Responsibilities

• Assists with phlebotomy and collecting appropriate specimens from patients as ordered, including pre-authorization and consent forms (ABN) for limited coverage tests.
• Assists with special procedures (e.g., bone marrows).
• Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining patient records.
• Sends specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed in-house.
• Processes incoming orders for lab testing, including reference laboratory specimens.
• Performs specimen analysis for Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology.
• Maintains and operates all laboratory equipment, including daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance.
• Adheres to quality control policies, documents QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
• Records lot numbers for controls, calibrators, and reagents.
• Participates in proficiency testing by analyzing and reporting results at least once a year.
• Prepares peripheral blood smears and performs complete WBC differentials.
• Performs microscopic examination of urinary sediment and records results.
• Processes specimens for send-out testing.
• Identifies and resolves problems affecting test performance or reporting, documenting corrective actions.
• Maintains proper documentation, including logs, equipment records, and checklists.
• Verifies critical results and documents follow-up.
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures viability before use.
• Prepares reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions as needed.
• Restocks the laboratory area.
• Processes in-house and incoming results for charting in a timely manner.
• Properly identifies and bands patients for blood product transfusion.
• Processes labeled specimens according to local blood bank policy.
• Adheres to OSHA compliance laws and Universal Precaution procedures.
• Complies with applicable regulatory agency standards.
• Properly disposes of hazardous materials.
• Maintains a clean working environment and confidentiality of patient and medical staff information.
• Performs CLIA-classified Waived and Moderately complex testing, potentially under the supervision of a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).

Qualifications

• Level 1: Associate degree in medical technology, laboratory science, or a related field. Current state license if required. AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification preferred but not required. No experience required (entry-level).
• Level 2: In addition to Level 1 qualifications, requires three years of experience.
• Level Sr: In addition to Level 1 and 2 qualifications, requires five years of experience.

Skills

• Full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for operating complex laboratory equipment.
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while using hands to handle, finger, or feel objects.
• Occasional lifting and carrying of items up to 40 lbs.
• Corrected vision, color perception, and hearing within normal range.
• Legible handwriting.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a laboratory setting with significant interaction with management, staff, and external auditors or clients. Frequent travel by air or automobile may be required, averaging approximately 70% of the workweek.

Schedule

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
