Medical Laboratory Scientist - PRN

Position Accountabilities

• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Performs all required procedures related to counting and identification of blood cells, coagulation studies and other specialized hematologic procedures.
• Inoculates, cultivates, classifies and identifies microorganisms found in bodily fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, and surgical specimens in order to provide data on cause, cure and prevention of infectious diseases.
• Participates in research activities and investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies, and introduces, demonstrates, effects, and recommends as is appropriate.
• Receives blood specimens sent to laboratory or draws blood from patient by venipuncture, observing strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens.
• Analyzes samples of patients such as blood, urine, or tissue and verifies results.
• Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains according to standard formulas and procedures.
• Reviews and reports test results to ensure quality control.
• Consults with Pathologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings.
• Cross matches donor's and patient's blood to determine compatibility.
• Studies morphology of red cells in terms of proportions of cells in various stages of development and other characteristics of red corpuscles which may be related to disease processes.
• Collects blood specimens from newborn through geriatric patients by venipuncture or capillary collection, as appropriate.
• May perform duties as a lead technologist for Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Urology, and Coagulation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
• Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT).
• Experience in performing laboratory tests and procedures.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment and techniques.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
