The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, as Testing Personnel defined by CLIA, performs waived and non-waived testing under general supervision, following department standard operating procedures to ensure accurate results. This role requires a professional level of knowledge to interpret test results used in diagnosis and treatment.
As a General Supervisor defined by CLIA, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II may oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, including supervision of assigned workstations, Quality Control (QC) review, staff training, competency assessment, and inventory management. Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting results, performing only those tests authorized by the laboratory director.
Responsibilities
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Adhere to quality control policies, document QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance.
- Follow corrective action policies when test systems deviate from established performance levels.
- Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting and correct them or notify the appropriate supervisor.
- Document all corrective actions taken for test system deviations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Sciences required.
- Certificate/Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Sciences required.
- Medical Technologist certification (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required.
- 1-2 years of laboratory experience required.
