About the role

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II position at Quest Diagnostics in Chantilly, VA operates Tuesday to Saturday, from 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM. This role requires proficiency in performing tests of moderate to high complexity and involves troubleshooting and supporting the department.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot applicable instruments and procedures.
  • Support the department in quality control, troubleshooting, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects.
  • Report on assigned analytical tests in accordance with SOPs, ensuring quality control requirements are met.
  • Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time of results, including reporting critical results to clients.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
  • Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
  • Comply with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and work practice controls as directed.
  • Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel.
  • Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections.
  • Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a Supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Chemistry-focused lab areas (Automated Chemistry, Immunoassay, LCMSMS, Special Chemistry, Toxicology); BS in Chemistry or Biochemistry from an accredited institution, plus 1- year full-time testing experience and/or training in a clinical laboratory setting; BS or BA in Biological Science with 25 semester units in Chemistry, including Analytical Chemistry & Instrumentation, plus 1 year full-time testing experience and/or training.
  • Experience: 1 year laboratory experience and/or training in high complexity testing in the specialties/sub-specialties in which testing will be performed.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods, lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds, frequent walking and standing, use manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments, and handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge: Theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty required; knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
  • Skills: Problem-solving skills, detail-oriented, ability to work independently, establish work priorities, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and Laboratory Information Systems.
