Medical Laboratory Scientist
About the role
The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory tests on patient specimens and provides information for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases. They maintain records of performance and utilize independent judgment to generate acceptable test results within quality control standards. They may participate in research and development activities, instruct students and staff on laboratory procedures, and develop and modify procedures as needed.
Responsibilities
- Maintain records of performance and generate acceptable test results within quality control standards.
- May participate in research and development activities.
- Instruct students and laboratory and non-laboratory staff on laboratory procedures and techniques.
- Develop and modify procedures as outlined by management or the laboratory director.
- Perform all tasks according to standard operating procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related sciences.
- One (1) year of relevant experience.
- Certification or eligibility for board certification by ASCP; AMT; NCA or equivalent certification.
- Certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
- Knowledge of various complex and lengthy laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Knowledge of specialized testing equipment and routine maintenance procedures.
- Able to maintain quality control and other records.
- Able to use computer to enter and retrieve test results.
- Ability to make quantitative and qualitative observations.
- Ability to work independently; handle constant interruptions and concurrent tasks.
- Knowledge of all laboratory safety regulations and protocols.
Qualifications
Requires Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or related sciences. Requires one (1) year of relevant experience. Requires certification or eligibility for board certification by ASCP; AMT; NCA or equivalent certification.
