Description

Under supervision, to perform the most specialized tasks of specimen preparation, provide training, daily unit coordination and act as a resource for laboratory staff during the pre-analytical collection and/or preparation of laboratory tests.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC)

O'Connor Hospital (OCH)

• 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County.
• Founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county.
• Grew significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits.
• Includes ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory.

St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH)

• 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area.
• Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.

Regional Medical Center (RMC)

• 258-bed hospital that is the main emergency healthcare provider for East San José.
• Treats a wide range of critical and life-threatening conditions for more than 60 years.
• Expanded critical services including Level II trauma, Thrombectomy capable Stroke Center and STEMI care since SCVH integration effective 4/1/25.
• Increasing emergency visits and inpatient volume.

Employment Standards

• Experience note: Required knowledge and abilities would normally be acquired through successful completion of high school or its equivalency including or supplemented by courses in high school science plus three years experience in medical laboratory services equivalent to the Medical Laboratory Assistant II.
• A certificate in Phlebotomy issued by the State of California is required for some positions.
• A valid California driver's license is required at time of appointment.
• Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below.

Knowledge

• Use and care of laboratory and related medical equipment;
• Laboratory and hospital information systems;
• Specific laboratory techniques and procedures;
• Appropriate specimen collection techniques and specimen requirements;
• Occupational hazards (including biohazards), and safety precautions required in laboratory work;
• Organizational structure of laboratories, hospitals and clinics;
• Appropriate customer service.

Ability

• To train staff and provide oral and written directions of a technical nature in exact detail;
• To perform assigned tasks according to prescribed procedures and make accurate observations of results;
• To train others in phlebotomy techniques and practices;
• To perform advanced laboratory manipulative techniques;
• To gain cooperation of patients in highly stressful situations;
• To work independently;
• To exhibit sound judgment;
• To communicate effectively in a written and oral manner.
