Medical Laboratory Assistant II- Anatomic Pathology
About the role
The Medical Laboratory Assistant II in Anatomic Pathology position at Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital is responsible for preparing specimens, performing laboratory tests, and maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. This position requires a minimum of 3 years of related experience and a relevant certification.
Responsibilities
- Prepares specimens for courier pick-up and delivery to referral labs as necessary.
- Communicates with other laboratory personnel regarding specimen transport needs.
- Performs various Laboratory Information System functions, filing requisitions, reports, and other pathology materials appropriately.
- Answers the telephone and refers requests for result delivery to physician offices.
- Independently handles resolution of complex problems and issues, notifying management of the issue and its resolution.
- Serves as an escalation support for less experienced staff.
- Organizes workload, prioritizes tasks, and troubleshoots workflow issues.
- Assists with specimen grossing as needed.
- Recognizes and addresses problems such as mislabeled specimens, incorrect tube types, etc., and takes corrective action.
- Operates automated instrumentation following safety measures and documents any processing equipment maintenance.
- Performs advanced functions in specialty areas such as frozen sections, special stains, cytology processing, and fine needle aspirations.
- Maintains a safe environment within the laboratory, adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
- Adjusts work schedule to accommodate departmental needs.
- Uses department resources and equipment efficiently.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent education (GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education).
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience required.
- Relevant certification (phlebotomy, medical laboratory assistant, etc.) preferred.
