About the role
The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists evaluate and report test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory.
Responsibilities

- Exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions.

- Accurately perform and record quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance.
- Organize, prioritize, and complete work to achieve defined turnaround times and expectations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve problems or unexpected test results, in a timely manner.
- Document and communicate to appropriate stakeholders.
- Complete incident reports as necessary.
- Participate in maintaining current department policies and procedures.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, vendors, and the public.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of information systems (HIS, LIS, software, Internet, etc.).
- Acquire, label, and transfer all required types of specimens for laboratory testing using accurate, effective, professional, and confidential accepted methodologies as required.
- Process, transfer, and refer required laboratory specimens in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and departmental policies as required.
- Comply with laboratory management requests to meet staffing plans and department needs.
- Assist the laboratory in all areas and participate in training and education of others as requested.
- Maintain inventory of reagents and supplies.
- Review, evaluate, and correlate laboratory results before releasing and reporting according to policies and procedures.
- Communicate and document critical information according to policies and procedures.
- Engage in opportunities for process improvement.
- Ensure quality and integrity of specimens prior to testing.
- Participate in proficiency testing.
- Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Comply with all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
- Comply with all accreditation standards.
- Collect and participate in the collection of process improvement data.
- Ensure less than 3 errors, resulting in chart revision, in a continuous 12-month period.
- Accumulate a minimum of 12 CEU per year related to medical laboratory science or provide education acceptable for acquisition of a position available at the hospital.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate's degree.
- Certifications: MLT or MLS certification or obtained within 6 months of hire OR Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course.
- Experience: 3 years acceptable clinical laboratory experience.
- Certifications: MT(ASCP) or equivalent.
