About the role

This position involves accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness, utilizing automation, computerization, and manual methods. The role handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids, which may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other bloodborne pathogens.

Responsibilities

  • 55% Critical Thinking and Analysis: Perform complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determine the reliability of analytic data before release for patient diagnosis and treatment. Interpret information to make judgmental decisions, troubleshoot technical procedures and instruments, and assess the validity of laboratory data considering medical correlations, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific treatments. Evaluate new testing methodologies and instrumentation. Role model safety and infection control practices. Provide mentorship to new lab associates, medical laboratory technicians, and students.
  • 15% Customer Service: Deliver professional and comfortable communication via telephone with physician office staff, clinical staff, laboratory associates, patients, and their families. Use service recovery where necessary.
  • 20% Quality Assurance and Equipment Maintenance: Perform quality control checks on procedures, reagents, stains, and equipment. Document and interpret QC data to validate patient results and verify instrument performance. Maintain and review maintenance logs to ensure optimum system performance, preventing costly equipment failures.
  • 5% Continuing Education and Competencies: Remain current in the field. Train students and new employees. Maintain competencies and mandatory educational requirements.
  • 5% Miscellaneous Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (Required).
  • Eligible to sit for the Board of Registry examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or completion of all required coursework for a Bachelor’s degree and eligible to sit for the ASCP exam.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Experience in an automated clinical laboratory.

Schedule

Evening shift, 24 scheduled weekly hours.
