Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures
  • Works semi-autonomously with general guidance on moderately complex procedures
  • Verifies instrument performance standards, including linearity, reportable range, and method comparisons
  • Demonstrates proficiency in laboratory computer systems for ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies; assists with inventory management
  • Communicates critical results to patient caregivers
  • Evaluates accuracy of results considering preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical sources of error
  • Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues, and pending work at shift change
  • Responds to technical inquiries related to work
  • Assists in training new team members and students
  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance consistent with policies and regulatory standards
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures

Other Related Functions

  • Performs specimen collection, receiving, and processing as required
  • Answers telephones and greets department guests
  • Maintains current job knowledge to effectively instruct students or other personnel
  • Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements
  • Practices infection control and safety; maintains a clean and organized work area
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital, and departmental matters

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Associate’s degree with two years of directly related experience may substitute)
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship
  • National certification (e.g., ASCP, AAB, AMT) preferred
  • Minimum of one year of experience
  • Department-specific competencies may be required based on assignment
