About the role

The Department of Pathology-Medical Center North Liberty is seeking multiple Medical Lab Scientists to provide moderately and highly complex clinical lab testing and analysis on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease.

Responsibilities

  • Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for both moderately and highly complex testing on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue/organ and body fluids.
  • Dispenses blood products that are compatible for the patient being transfused.
  • Dispenses tissue products to the OR.
  • Prepares surgical specimens and other designated specimen types for transport to MCU.
  • Prepares packing list/bill of lading as required/necessary.
  • After consultation with/direction from a Decedent Care Specialist, and in collaboration with Safety/Security staff, releases decedents from the body hold cooler when necessary.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
  • Six (6) months – One (1) year clinical laboratory experience, which may include program training experience is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a laboratory performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood baking, chemistry, hematology, and/or microbiology, which may include program training experience, is highly desired.
