Medical Lab Assistant
About the role
The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) plays a vital role in patient care by collecting, preparing, and processing specimens for laboratory testing. This position performs CLIA-waived and point-of-care testing, supports clinical laboratory operations, and ensures accuracy, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Collect and prepare blood and non-blood specimens (urine, sputum, throat swabs, etc.)
- Assess specimen quality and identify unacceptable samples (e.g., hemolyzed, lipemic, underfilled)
- Perform and report CLIA-waived and approved tests
- Process specimens for testing, storage, shipment, or reference labs
- Prepare slides, load instruments, and report results as allowed under CLIA regulations
- Resolve unclear or unusual test orders by coordinating with providers, nursing staff, or reference laboratories
- Maintain compliance with laboratory, hospital, and safety policies
- Participate in department meetings, training, and quality assurance activities
- Keep work areas clean and well-stocked
- Perform required documentation, logs, and clerical functions
- Build positive working relationships with providers, patients, and coworkers
- Complete other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Previous education or experience in a healthcare-related field preferred
- Phlebotomy certification required or ability to obtain within one year of hire
- Prolonged standing, walking, and specimen collection
- Periods of sitting and computer work
- Ability to lift and move 30-40 pounds (supplies and patient support)

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Effective time management and prioritization abilities
- Professional, patient-centered customer service skills
- CPR/BLS certification preferred

Pay
The pay range for this position begins at $17.30 per hour.
Schedule
Either three (3) 12-hour shifts or four (4) 10-hour shifts between 6AM - 6:30PM.
