About the role

The Medical Interpreter/Translator facilitates clear, accurate, and effective medical and general interpretation for healthcare staff, patients, companions, and visitors. They interpret complex medical information, demonstrate knowledge of the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Healthcare, and assess patients' understanding of conveyed information. The role also involves advising medical personnel about cultural factors that may impact patient care and interpreting with a high degree of accuracy in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret complex medical information for patients and/or companions.
  • Assess and monitor patients' understanding of information conveyed.
  • Advise medical personnel about cultural information that may impact patient care.
  • Interpret with accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes.
  • Self-correct, understand linguistic limitations, seek clarification, and accept corrections.
  • Maintain knowledge of medical and general terminology.
  • Utilize technology, tools, and resources to support departmental workflows.
  • Translate written material into one or more languages while maintaining meaning, context, and localization.
  • Support an exceptional experience through professional, timely, and accurate communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Superior fluency in one or more languages in addition to English.
  • Understanding of regional accents, linguistic styles, and registers.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum 40 hours of Professional Medical Interpreter Training.
  • Must successfully pass a language assessment through St. Luke’s Health System prior to hire.
