About the role
The Medical Interpreter I is responsible for assessing the needs of patients and providing interpretation of medical information. Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in cancer research and patient care.
Responsibilities
- Immediately and effectively answer requests for interpretation throughout the Institute, prioritizing urgent requests.
- Arrive on time for appointments and provide services from entry to discharge.
- Accurately interpret and transmit complex medical information from medical providers to patients, including consent forms, diagnoses, during medical procedures, and discharge plans.
- Accurately interpret and transmit information from patients to medical providers.
- Assist patients and clinical providers in a professional and courteous manner.
- Provide high-quality service to every patient and refer to appropriate resources if necessary.
- Evaluate, certify, and seek additional training in interpreting, healthcare practices, and cultural differences.
- Maintain accurate records of services rendered and documentation of patient information.
- Resolve most issues independently, answer questions, and make appropriate referrals. Handle more complex issues with the Supervisor of Interpreter Services.
- Interpret medical information using in-person, on-campus, video, and telephonic modalities.
- Recognize and respect diversity for all patients and DFCI workforce, intervening as a cultural broker when communication is compromised.
- Follow recognized Medical Interpreter Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
- Complete and pass an assessment for initial interpreter screening and ongoing competencies, including medical terminology, code of ethics, standards of practice, role of the medical interpreter, and interpreter skills.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in a human relations field (Sociology, Psychology) preferred.
- One year of experience working as a medical interpreter required.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic procedures and treatments.
- Fluent in English and target language, both verbally and in writing.
- Certificate of completion of medical interpreter training program required.
- National Certification preferred.

$56,000.00 - $64,200.00
