About the role

This full-time position is responsible for the overall direction and coordination of professional medical care within assigned units at HonorHealth, ensuring that medical services are rendered in an appropriate and timely manner. The role involves in-service training for hospital staff, active participation in performance measurement and improvement, and collaboration with various departments to enhance patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Policy Development:
    • Participate in and direct the multidisciplinary development, maintenance, and annual review of departmental policies and procedures.
    • Advise Hospital Administration on administrative policies and procedures.
    • Oversee the assigned program balanced scorecard in conjunction with the Nurse Manager of Critical Care.
    • Develop, communicate, and ensure maintenance of standards of care for assigned patients in collaboration with Medical Staff and Nursing committees.
    • Collaborate with staff, coordinators, Nursing Service, and ancillary departments to establish protocols for bed assignments, resource utilization, and nursing care.
  • Administrative:
    • Review credentials and appoint new physicians to the in-house Intensivist Panel based on organizational criteria.
    • Conduct annual reviews of physicians on the Intensivist Panel.
    • Develop daily coverage schedules for in-house intensivists.
    • Review physician performance issues and recommend termination of contractual relationships when appropriate.
    • Participate in the evaluation of clinical competence of unit staff.
    • Facilitate resolution of physician-nurse conflicts.
    • Actively participate in hospital and Medical Staff committees (e.g., Medicine and Quality Resources Management).
    • Maintain liaison with other critical care hospitals and represent the hospital’s interests to third-party payor Medical Directors.
    • Support regulatory/compliance statutes and collaborate with Case Management to ensure admissions meet licensed criteria.
    • Participate in the selection and evaluation of new equipment for the Respiratory Care department.
    • Represent intensivists, physicians, and nurses in budgeting and purchasing decisions.
    • Collaborate with hospital administration to obtain and maintain program accreditation.
    • Represent the hospital at regulatory agencies and committees as requested.
  • Clinical Care:
    • Provide overall clinical supervision and medical direction of the units.
    • Assist with patient triage in conjunction with the management team.
    • Communicate with attending and consulting physicians to optimize patient care.
    • Intervene in disputes between physicians regarding patient care.
    • Designate an attending physician when the role is unclear to staff, patients, or families.
    • Assume care of a patient in cases of unresolved disputes between physicians.
    • Review patient care records and address quality of care issues with involved physicians.
    • Recommend removal of a physician from a patient’s care if quality of care threatens the patient’s life or limb.
  • Quality Enhancement:
    • Participate in planning, monitoring, and evaluating the program quality improvement process.
    • Chair monthly Mortality and Morbidity educational conferences.
    • Review avoidable day reports and intervene with physicians who have a disproportionate number of occurrences.
    • Collaborate with Nurse Managers and Nursing Clinical Director to resolve quality and utilization issues.
    • Monitor the quality, appropriateness, and timeliness of care provided by physicians in the units.
    • Ensure compliance with standards, rules, regulations, and laws pertinent to the program.
    • Actively participate in performance measurements and process improvement activities.
    • Ensure proper documentation of all medical care rendered by contracted intensivist physicians.
  • Educational:
    • Originate and participate in educational programs for Telemetry staff, allied health staff, and physicians.
    • Complete 25 hours of related continuing medical education annually.
    • Ensure in-house intensivists participate in 16 hours of related continuing medical education annually.
    • Participate in community outreach programs related to prevention (e.g., heart attacks, elderly falls).
    • Coordinate and facilitate monthly reviews of key cases.
    • Conduct daily bedside rounds with Charge Nurses and provide in-service education programs for staff.
  • Research:
    • Oversee, coordinate, and facilitate research projects in the unit.
    • Participate in and encourage research activities to improve the quality of care.
  • Organizational Relationship:
    • Participate in semiannual performance evaluations with the Chief Medical Officer and Administrator.
    • Coordinate goals and performance criteria with the Committee.
    • May oversee a part-time Associate Medical Director who reports directly to this role.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Doctorate (M.D. or D.O.).
  • 3 years of related experience and/or direct hospitalist clinical or acute care experience.
  • Experience in medical staff leadership, such as committee Chairperson or medical staff officer.
  • Holds unsupervised privileges at current or previous institution.
  • Must complete supervision and/or monitoring requirements in their specialty, including full ventilator privileges during initial provisional year.

Qualifications

  • Physician - State Licensure (Required).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Certification (Required).
