Medical Director

Responsibilities

• Act as attending physician for all clients admitted to assigned site(s), reviewing admission records, discharge plans, and authorizing client medical treatment or issuing referrals to local hospitals.
• Provide regular on-site medical clinic services in accordance with an established schedule.
• Collect and analyze information from diverse sources to solve problems or design complex systems and programs.
• Review, authorize, and sign clinical documentation, including admissions, treatment plans, continued stays, discharges, nursing assessments, and orders.
• Utilize the eScribe system to enter and authorize medication orders for assigned patients.
• Review medical policies and procedures to ensure compliance with licensing and associated standards.
• Develop goals and objectives for improving client medical care and related services to enhance program quality and effectiveness.
• Oversee services provided by registered nurses or other licensed staff to ensure appropriateness of treatment.
• Review documentation to ensure medical records meet established guidelines for sound medical practice.
• Confer with the Director, Clinical Director, and other medical advisory staff to identify and resolve client treatment issues.
• Develop and/or provide training on general medical issues and specific updates related to addiction or substance abuse treatment for clinical staff.
• Participate in performance improvement activities.
• Occasionally travel to various locations and sites for reviews, audits, and advisory committee meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned, such as participating in utilization review requests from third-party payers, ordering laboratory and diagnostic tests, and evaluating data obtained.

Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree and residency in a primary specialty.
• Current professional license to practice medicine in the state of hire and Board Certification.
• Established medical privileges at one or more local hospitals.
• Current certification or eligibility and recognition by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) as a qualified medical practitioner in addictions medicine for Gateway Foundation accredited programs.
• Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in a medical field.

Skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of medical standards, practices, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of medical standards and practices related to substance abuse or addictive disorder treatment.
• Understanding of the principles of physical growth and development and psychosocial development, with the ability to assess and interpret client data and identify individual needs.
• Ability to provide health-related care appropriate to adult and geriatric clients, including:
  • For adult clients: Knowledge of common health risks related to substance abuse to teach and facilitate preventative health promotion.
  • For geriatric clients: Knowledge of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes in later adulthood (e.g., multiple health issues, chronic pain, medication interactions, depression, cognitive deficits) to create individualized treatment plans and understand medication impacts on cognitive and behavioral functioning.
• Proficiency with computers and data management software for completing required forms, reports, and correspondence.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to oversee and provide medical advice in substance abuse treatment and ensure compliance with state, regulatory, or accreditation standards.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to lead, mentor, and develop staff, and establish positive collaborative working relationships.

Physical Requirements

• Sedentary work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Primarily involves sitting, with occasional walking or standing.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person or by telephone to gather and exchange information.
• Ability to speak to conduct training sessions, exchange information, and consult with others.
• Ability to record and proofread required information and documentation.
• Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal regularly to receive, retrieve, and audit information and data.
• Occasional travel to program sites and administrative locations.

Pay

Compensation range is between $133,253 - $200,000 annually, based on experience and credentials. Gateway Foundation conducts annual reviews including merit increases.
