Medical Director

About the Role

The Corrections Site Medical Director at Atlantic County Justice Facility is responsible for overseeing the provision of medical services to inmate patients consistent with current CFG clinical guidelines and community standards of care. The role involves overall supervision of clinical services, managing and evaluating medical program activities, and ensuring compliance with company goals, industry standards, and contractual obligations.

The Site Medical Director manages primary and consultative services, collaborates with subspecialists, and interfaces with hospital providers to ensure timely and appropriate care. This position also functions as a liaison between correctional officials, public agencies, and the company, while maintaining quality control through education, service audits, and studies.

Responsibilities

• Performs and documents routine physical examinations on inmate patients referred by nursing/professional staff, adhering to NCCHC, ACA, and PBNDS standards.
• Participates in the annual review and approval of CFG clinical guidelines, protocols, policies, and the medical disaster plan.
• Evaluates credentials of healthcare providers and ensures implementation and supervision of on-site chronic care clinics.
• Acts as the primary care physician for inmate patients, coordinating both on-site and off-site care.
• Performs medical examinations on all new inmates within contracted intervals of admission.
• Provides treatment, orders studies, tests, and ancillary services as part of basic healthcare services.
• Supervises clinical services provided by professional and paraprofessional staff, including conducting "Doctor Sick Call."
• Supervises the development and application of policies, procedures, and protocols for detainee/inmate care.
• Participates in interviewing and hiring physician and mid-level provider staff.
• Supervises clinical treatments, medications, and other therapies within state regulations and CFG formulary guidelines.
• Provides emergency treatment on-site and responds appropriately in urgent or emergency situations.
• Records all care information concisely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
• Promotes a therapeutic environment ensuring inmates are treated professionally, ethically, and tactfully.
• Ensures all telephone orders are countersigned within 72 hours.
• Monitors referrals to outside healthcare facilities for appropriateness, quality, and continuity of care.
• Evaluates and approves local infection control policies, medication administration/storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
• Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities and completes required training.
• Adheres to facility and OSHA safety rules, CFG Health Systems Occurrence Protocol, and PREA regulations.
• Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility.

Requirements

• Completion from an accredited medical school with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree.
• Completion of a U.S.-based residency program.
• Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state where the facility is located.
• At least two years of public health, emergency, or family practice experience; previous correctional healthcare experience preferred.

• Unrestricted and valid prescriptive authority with DEA, DEA-X, and Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS).

Functional Demands

• Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.
• May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Provide 24-hour on-call coverage to advise medical providers in the care of inmate patients.
