About the role

The Medical Director is responsible for defining the clinical program structure and scope, providing leadership and supervision to physicians and mid-level providers, leading quality improvement activities, and delivering direct patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care.
  • Supervises and audits the delivery of medical care by clinical staff; serves as a mentor and resolves practice-related issues.
  • Recruits and selects medical providers; conducts regular performance reviews and feedback sessions.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of care, updates clinical guidelines, and ensures adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates community health and environmental needs; develops and implements quality assurance plans.
  • Represents the health center at relevant meetings; conducts peer review and provides corrective action plans as necessary.
  • Sets standards for evidence-based care; participates in administrative meetings and collaborates with the Practice Manager.
  • Participates in organizational meetings such as quality, compliance, and management meetings.

Requirements

  • Seven to ten years of experience in family or internal medicine.
  • At least five years of experience directing medical services.
  • Clear understanding of and commitment to the health center’s mission.
  • Knowledge of health problems and disparities affecting low-income persons.
  • Experience with quality improvement concepts and practices.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional time management, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Current, valid license to practice medicine in the State of Maine.
  • Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of residency in Family Practice or Med/Peds.
  • Board Certification.

Qualifications

  • Extensive understanding of the FQHC environment and compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office products.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
