About the role

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology in Seattle, WA is seeking a 50% FTE Medical Courier to join their Reference Laboratory Services (RLS) Team. RLS Medical Couriers play a crucial role in maintaining a robust digital chain of custody for UWMC specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a University of Washington vehicle to transport laboratory specimens, laboratory reports, supplies, and other designated materials between UWMC and medical facilities and laboratories within Washington State.
  • Handle biohazardous specimens, including tissues and fluids, which may contain viruses or other infectious particles or microorganisms. Work with contagious patients.
  • Adhere to "Universal Precaution" procedures when handling or transporting biohazardous materials. This includes understanding what Universal Precaution guidelines protect against and what they do not.
  • Maintain the integrity of specimens being transported, ensuring they are transported at the same temperature they were picked up and delivered at the correct location.
  • Accurately record individual route stops and specimens transported.
  • Follow UW Fleet Services rules and regulations, keeping the assigned vehicle clean and fuel tank sufficiently filled.
  • Participate in and support UW Fleet Services vehicle maintenance program and quality assessment and improvement activities.
  • Be receptive to new ideas and procedures, adapting to route/schedule changes as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively, ask for assistance when needed, and respond promptly to calls or texts.
  • Access and utilize Workday and other UW online resources for personal and employment data, training, or other assignments, and education opportunities.
  • Taught and demonstrated tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Desired qualifications include professional driving experience, acceptable minimum three (3) year clean driving abstract, experience handling bio-hazardous laboratory specimens and familiarity with universal precautions, experience with customer service relations, and demonstrated success working independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

Skills

  • Proficiency in using digital devices such as computers and smartphones.

  • Pay Range: Minimum $21.70 hourly, maximum $22.72 hourly.
  • Shift: First Shift (United States of America).
  • Type: Temporary or Regular.
  • FTE: 50.00%.
  • Union/Bargaining Unit: SEIU Local 925.
  • Position: Nonsupervisory.
