MEDICAL CONSULTANT I, DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES
About the role
The Medical Consultant (MC) works under the direction of the Disability Evaluation Services Administrator I (DESA I) to adjudicate disability benefit applications under Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Medi-Cal programs. The MC evaluates case histories, medical reports, and assesses the effects of medical or surgical treatments against program requirements. They also provide assessments of an applicant's functional abilities based on program guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Reviews case histories and medical reports
- Evaluates and interprets medical reports
- Evaluates possible effects of medical or surgical treatment in relation to program requirements
- Provides assessments of the applicant's functional abilities based on program guidelines
- Participates in team decision-making regarding quality, workflow, and production
Requirements

Qualifications
The MC must have a Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field and two years of experience in disability evaluation or related field. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills
Strong analytical skills, ability to interpret medical reports, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are required. Knowledge of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Medi-Cal programs is preferred.

Pay
The starting salary range for this position is $14,017.00 - $19,232.00 B, with a maximum range of $14,425.00 - $19,790.00 C. The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
Schedule
The position is classified as Permanent, Full-Time and is a Hybrid role, combining both remote and in-office work.
