About the role
As a Medical Billing Specialist at Life Link III, you will play a crucial role in ensuring accurate billing, regulatory compliance, and timely reimbursement for high-cost transport services. You will support patients through the billing process with empathy and professionalism while collaborating closely with internal teams to maintain operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Billing & Insurance Operations:
- Review and audit transport documentation to ensure billing accuracy and compliance.
- Verify insurance coverage including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers.
- Submit accurate and timely claims for rotor wing, fixed wing, and specialty care transports.
- Research and resolve billing discrepancies and missing documentation.
- Apply appropriate ICD-10 and transport billing codes.
- Maintain accurate patient records and data integrity within billing systems.
- Process insurance and patient payments while reconciling adjustments and balances.
- Patient Advocacy & Customer Support:
- Serve as a primary point of contact for patient billing questions and financial support.
- Aid patients in understanding insurance coverage, deductibles, co-insurance, and payment responsibilities.
- Assist with hardship waivers, charity care, payment plans, and appeals processes.
- Provide compassionate customer service during stressful recovery periods.
- Negotiate balances within approved company guidelines.
- Team Collaboration & Operational Support:
- Collaborate with the billing team to meet departmental goals and service standards.
- Cross-train and provide team support as needed.
- Participate in audits, process improvements, and special projects.
- Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and regulatory requirements.
- Represent the mission, values, and professionalism of Life Link III in every interaction.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of healthcare billing experience, including insurance verification and diagnosis coding.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and healthcare billing processes.
- Experience using ICD-10 coding.
- Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management abilities.
- Experience with billing software systems.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
- Understanding of HIPAA and confidentiality requirements.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Preferred qualifications include an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, billing or coding certifications (CAC, CADS, CPC, CPB, or CEDC), experience in complex healthcare or emergency services billing environments, familiarity with insurance appeals and payer follow-up processes, experience coordinating payment plans and negotiating patient balances.
