About the role

The Medical Assistant at NCH is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices. Essential duties include checking schedules, escorting patients, assisting with patient care, documenting interventions, and fulfilling clerical responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
• Escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms.
• Observes, records, and reports patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
• Aiding patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc.
• Collecting patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
• Providing patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
• Aiding providers with various procedures as needed.
• Documenting in the Electronic Medical Record and relaying information/instructions to patient/family.
• Documenting all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
• Answering patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
• Fulfilling clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling.
• Collecting and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices.
• Adhering to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
• Utilizing electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.

Requirements

• Minimum of High School or GED required.
• Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience performing above duties in a medical office setting or medical capacity.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.
• Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
• Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
• Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology.
• Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
