About the role

The Medical Assistant supports the practice with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow. They perform a variety of clinical and administrative duties, including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining universal precautions
  • Rooming patients, taking vital signs and measurements
  • Performing phlebotomy as needed
  • Administering vaccines
  • Performing treatments and procedures as ordered by the provider
  • Answering practice education, counseling, and performing various testing and screenings
  • Maintaining patients' rooms, setting up and stocking as appropriate, and ordering and tracking supplies
  • Answering phones, greeting patients, scheduling appointments, processing orders, collecting encounter forms, and preparing correspondence

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients and escorts them into exam rooms
  • Aid with procedures as directed and supervised by MD, NP, or PA
  • Takes vital signs and documents accordingly
  • Assists administrative team with greeting patients, scheduling appointments, processing orders, collecting encounter forms, and answering telephones
  • Coordinates room rotations and assists with receiving test results
  • Cleans instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines
  • Maintains sterilizer competencies
  • Maintains excellent customer service and fosters an environment of optimal patient care
  • Ensures appropriate communication in changes to schedule with medical staff
  • Cross-trains to assist in covering the front desk team
  • Performs new employee orientation, reviews departmental protocols, policies, and workflow
  • Works collaboratively with Nursing Supervisor in preparation of evaluations and chart reviews
  • Participates in flu clinics
  • Works weekends and holidays

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred, completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred
  • Experience: Experience in a clinical setting preferred
  • Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support required, CMA - Certified Medical Assistant certificate preferred
  • Knowledge and Abilities: Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills; strong clinical judgment; good organizational and prioritization skills; ability to work as a team player; demonstrated knowledge of medical procedures; extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and English grammar; ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; ability to read, understand, and respond to detailed oral and written instructions; ability to communicate clearly; ability to lead and take direction from Nursing Supervisor; computer proficiency through efficient use of electronic medical record, telephone communications, e-mail, and other computer software as required.
