About the role
The Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting the practice with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow.
Clinical duties
- Maintaining universal precautions; rooming patients, taking necessary vital signs and measurements
- Performing phlebotomy as needed
- Administering vaccines
- Performing treatments and procedures as ordered by the provider
- Answering practice education, counseling and performing various testing and screenings
- Maintaining patients' rooms, setting up and stocking, as appropriate
- Ordering and tracking supplies for the practice
- Assisting physicians in all minor procedures and wound care as requested
- Acting as a chaperone when needed
- Cleaning instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines
- Maintaining sterilizer competencies
Administrative responsibilities
- Making appointments, filing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, preparing patient charts
- Obtaining referrals and paperwork from referring physician offices
- Greeting patients coming in for appointments and escorting them into patient exam rooms
- Assisting with determining reason for visit or phone call, flagging for immediate responses, taking messages appropriately and notifying appropriate medical staff
- Coordinating room rotations
- Assisting with receiving test results for physicians and calling patients with follow up of labs and tests under direction of physician/nurse practitioner
- Assisting in covering the front desk team when needed, including patient check in/out, answering patient questions, and other related administrative tasks
- Managing email communications in a timely manner
- Using all computer applications, Meditech, Lotus Notes, i-heal
- Assisting in uploading photographs into Meditech and i-heal
Patient care and communication
- Communicating critical patient information to the nurse and/or provider
- Acting in a professional manner at all times
- Maintaining a positive attitude at all times, creating a collaborative and team oriented environment
- Ensuring appropriate communication in changes in schedule with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, staff and patients
- Verifying schedule at end of clinic and giving to Program Director
- Participating in daily huddles, attending 75% of scheduled staff meetings and attending workflow/other meetings as needed
Training and mentorship
- Precepting new employees using the established check off sheet reviewing departmental protocols, policies and workflow
- Serving as a role model/mentor providing support, training and sharing of knowledge including explaining and monitoring new workflows and policies
- Working in collaboration with Nursing Supervisor in the preparation of yearly evaluations by providing individual feedback and assisting with chart review and reviewing yearly competencies and ensuring compliance with all personnel policies
Safety
- Fostering a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment
- Demonstrating required office and clinical equipment competencies
- Verifying patient identification according to policy prior to administration of care and/or procedures
- Complying with the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines through proper hand-washing
- Adhering to universal precautions and making appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times
- Appropriately disposing of hazardous materials
- Utilizing proper body mechanics when performing all aspects of the job
- Following appropriate chain of communication/command
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred
- Experience in a clinical setting preferred
- BLS - Basic Life Support required
- CMA - Certified Medical Assistant certificate preferred
- Must be able to work at multiple sites
- Works the required weekend and holiday schedule
- Commits to two sessions of annual flu clinics
