Medical Assistant - University GYN Oncology

About the Role

University Physicians Association is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant (MA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) for University GYN Oncology, located within the UT Medical Center Campus in Knoxville, TN. You'll work alongside experienced providers and healthcare professionals in a supportive environment where patient-centered care, teamwork, and professional growth are valued. Responsibilities

  • Provide both direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals.
  • Room patients efficiently and ensure a smooth clinic flow.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and patient information accurately.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist providers with:
    • Pelvic exams and Pap smears
    • Colposcopies
    • Biopsies
    • Additional office-based procedures
  • Perform wound care, dressing changes, and staple removal as directed.
  • Support patient admissions and coordinate care with other healthcare team members.
  • Educate patients regarding MyRisk genetic testing and assist with required paperwork.
  • Provide clear, compassionate communication to patients and families.
  • Respond promptly to patient questions and concerns.
  • Promote patient satisfaction through exceptional service and follow-up care.
  • Coordinate referrals, testing, imaging, and specialty appointments as needed.
  • Prepare and process specimens for pathology and laboratory testing.
  • Coordinate the shipment of MyRisk testing specimens and documentation.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and provide appointment confirmations.
  • Maintain clinic inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Manage instrument transport to and from sterile processing.
  • Assist with prescription requests and other clinical support activities.
  • Ensure that patients are brought back to clinic and processed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Record vitals and place patients in exam rooms, ensuring ROS/Medication sheet is accurately filled.
  • Educate patients on MyRisk testing and process their paperwork.
  • Send MyRisk specimen and paperwork to MyRisk Facility.
  • Assist with exams and procedures such as pap smears, colposcopies, biopsies, and tampon tests.
  • Remove staples or re-dress wounds.
  • Properly label and send pap smears and biopsies for pathology pick-up.
  • Schedule future appointments as appropriate during clinic and give confirmations to patients.
  • Order supplies as needed to maintain appropriate levels for patient care needs.
  • Request outside slides/discs as needed.
  • Call bed board for admission and page resident (if not in clinic).

Requirements

  • Must have certification from a medical assistant program or military medical corpsman program.
  • Minimum 1-year medical experience in a clinical setting.
  • Strong clinical and patient care skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • A commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical patient care.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and a patient-first approach.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply standard precautions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, and other medical specialties.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency (JACHO, OSHA, CDC) guidelines/requirements.
  • Knowledge of pharmacological actions and interactions.
  • Knowledge/demonstration of counseling techniques.
