Job Description

This position supports the Surgical Specialities Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. It is a 16/week position with additional hours as needed, working first shift Monday through Friday.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of activities during patient visits, including setting up and assisting providers and monitoring patients during and following routine and special procedures.
  • Performs phlebotomy, vital signs, height and weight measurements, suture removal, and dressing changes as needed.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and inspects medical equipment and instruments between each patient use, preparing them for sterilization and inspecting for damage or repairs.
  • Collects and performs appropriate departmental screening, lab tests, and specimen collection, implementing quality control standards as required.
  • Provides patients with relevant instructions for specific tests and procedures, schedules follow-up tests and appointments, and contacts patients with reminder appointments.
  • Assists licensed practitioners by queuing prescriptions for renewal and performing the initial review of medication listings in the electronic medical record (Web OMR).
  • Procures and correlates medical correspondences from Health Information Management, providers, and administration as directed by the department.
  • Takes complete, accurate information from patients, prioritizing and communicating to clinical staff appropriately, and distributes questionnaires and forms to patients at the beginning of the visit.
  • Enters orders and information relating to the patient visit in OMR as assigned, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Ambulates and provides patient care functions to ensure patient comfort and dignity during exams, including transferring patients from wheelchairs to exam tables, undressing and dressing patients, and ensuring patient safety until the provider arrives.
  • Ensures that equipment and supplies necessary for patient care activities are available and usable, monitors code cart supplies, tracks, orders, and maintains supplies and equipment, and escorts patients to other ancillary areas as needed.
  • Supports clinical staff by assisting with other support activities as requested by managers or clinical providers.
  • Attends internal and external educational or training sessions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Medical assisting experience required through any of the following areas: MA, CNA (or LNA), EMT, PCT certificate, Associates Degree in Medical Assisting. Current or former nursing or medical student who has completed at least one clinical rotation. Successful completion of BIDMC in-house competency program in 2019.
  • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Physical Nature of the Job

The job is physical in nature and requires standing and moving around throughout the majority of the shift. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently.

Pay Range

$21.00 – $28.26
