About the role

The Medical Assistant, Surgical Services supports patients throughout their abortion-care experience by providing compassionate clinical assistance, patient education, and administrative support. This position prepares patients for care, assists with abortion procedures, performs laboratory services, maintains accurate medical records, and helps ensure patient visits move safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients and provide accurate information about available services, contraceptive options, funding resources, and what to expect during their visit.
  • Prepare patients for care and assist clinicians during abortion procedures.
  • Provide appropriate patient education, information, forms, and referrals.
  • Conduct pregnancy testing and provide related information and referrals.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, including blood and urine samples.
  • Perform venipuncture within the scope of your training, certification, or licensure.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate patient registration, medical, laboratory, and visit records.
  • Document required information in the electronic health record and review entries for accuracy.
  • Verify patient payment methods and determine eligibility for financial assistance or private-pay services.
  • Calculate patient fees and collect, post, and reconcile payments according to organizational billing and financial procedures.
  • Provide patients with the appropriate forms and review them for completion.
  • Complete required daily financial and charge-closing activities.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, health center leadership, and other team members to provide coordinated and efficient patient care.
  • Communicate with team members to help patient visits progress in a timely manner.
  • Handle medical waste and follow universal precautions and workplace safety requirements.
  • Follow organizational policies, current medical standards, and HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA requirements.
  • Participate in required training, quality improvement, risk-management activities, and staff meetings.

Qualifications and Benefits

Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical Assistant certification.
  • Previous experience in an OB-GYN, surgical, procedural, or recovery-room setting.
  • Experience in reproductive healthcare or family-planning services.
  • Experience using an electronic health record or patient scheduling system.
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language needed within the position’s service area.
