About the role
This is public health work assisting physicians and other health care providers in providing health services for patients.
Responsibilities
- Assist with examinations and treatments while practicing universal precautions, sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate.
- Prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas.
- Operates and maintains office and clinical equipment.
- Assesses and anticipates patient needs and records patient data accurately, including the medication record.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding PHI.
- Collections and processes laboratory specimens, including venipunctures and urine collection.
- Performs routine diagnostic tests.
- Collects valid and reliable health data.
- Understands factors affecting the health of an individual and community from information collected during the medical assessment.
- Identifies the needs of the patients and exchanges information with nurses and providers about the patient.
- Maintains inventory of office and clinical supplies and medications.
- Recognizes emergency situations and responds appropriately.
- Follows safety and security procedures.
- Operates emergency equipment and completes incident reports accurately.
- Prepares and maintains medical records.
- Schedules and monitors appointments.
- Follows up on no shows.
- Types and enters data accurately, including procedural and diagnostic coding.
- Uses medical terminology correctly.
- Educates patients concerning treatments, medications, immunizations, and office policies.
- Participates in professional development opportunities and contributes to continuous improvement of individual, program, and organizational performance.
- Responds to Public Health emergencies as assigned by the Health Department.
Requirements
Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
Veterans' Preference: Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Certificate or diploma as a Medical Assistant, or Associate in Science as a Medical Assistant from an accredited MA Program and accredited as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Skills
- Routine office management practices including patient scheduling, record keeping, billing and receiving fees, inventory and ordering supplies.
- Medical instruments and sterilization procedures.
- Basic medical procedures for preparing patient for examination by physician.
- Equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests.
- Laboratory procedures.
- Medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology.
- Procedures for administering injections or treatments.
