About the role
The Senior Medical Assistant (MA) provides clinical support to patients and assists care providers with clinical and administrative duties in the Burn Clinic.
Responsibilities
- Prepares patients for health care visits by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Conducts quality checks.
- Performs and supports patient reception including check-in, check-out, registration, scheduling, and coordinating follow-up visits.
- Creates moderately complex patient correspondence (e.g., completes medication administration permission forms, refill request routing).
- Participates in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) medication management; may synthesize or compile data from multiple areas of the medical record to complete forms.
- Independently initiates referrals and insurance pre-authorizations.
- Provides general office support including phone and fax management.
- Completes daily, weekly, and monthly monitoring of reports and compliance (e.g., daily charge report, compliance with logs and checks).
- Serves as preceptor for new staff, including orientation, education, skill validation, tracking, assessment, and monitoring progress.
- Ensures supplies are ready by monitoring inventory, stocking work areas, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
- Participates in hospital committees as directed by leadership.
- Serves as a mentor, expert in clinical area/skill, safety coach/specialist, and assists in reviewing and assessing peers’ skill sets.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
- Reports areas of concern to the next care provider.
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
- Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and The Joint Commission standards.
- Supports patient care delivery by assisting health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic testing; disposing of contaminated supplies; cleaning or preparing instruments for sterilization; administering medications per policy and procedures; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies.
- Anticipates and leads in balancing workloads and MA assignments, maintaining patient/clinic flow by coordinating with providers and clinic team.
- Provides phlebotomy and advanced specimen processing (e.g., centrifuge, Meditech) when indicated.
- Completes lab test follow-up and medical record documentation.
- Prepares and completes medical records for visits by recording patient information, treatment, and test results.
- Assists with patient “MyChart” enrollment.
- Participates in standardized education of patients through written instructions and answering questions as directed by provider.
- Cross-trains in multiple specialties/sub-specialties for front and back office (where applicable).
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
- One (1) year in a direct health care role; ambulatory experience preferred.
- Equivalency: Additional one year of experience in a direct health care role may substitute for graduation from a Medical Assistant program (total experience requirement without graduation is two years).
Qualifications
- BLS for Healthcare Providers / CPR Certification.
- Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, National Certified Medical Assistant, Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant, or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant.
Pay
Hourly range: $18.44 to $27.67, dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
