Medical Assistant - Regular Full-Time and Per Diem Pool

About the Role

Riverside University Health System (RUHS) - Community Health Clinics are seeking qualified Medical Assistants for regular full-time and per-diem positions throughout Riverside County. This posting will remain open to fill current and future vacancies. Positions designated as bilingual (Spanish) require demonstrated proficiency, verified through a County-administered bilingual proficiency assessment. Applications remain valid for 90 days, and candidates may indicate their employment preference type and preferred location/clinic. Staffing demand is particularly high in the Desert Region (Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, and surrounding cities).

Under direct supervision, Medical Assistants provide a variety of client/patient services, including basic administrative, clerical, and medical support for clients/patients and the public. Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required. Applicants must upload copies of their Medical Assistant Certification and AHA BLS card at the time of application submission.

Schedule

Departments, locations, work schedules, and shift times are subject to change based on clinic needs. Specific schedules will be discussed during the interview. Per Diem status does not guarantee a flexible schedule or part-time employment; schedules are determined by departmental operational needs, and employees may be required to work full-time.

About the Team

Riverside University Health System provides a wide range of primary and specialty care services across 13 Community Health Centers (CHCs) throughout Riverside County. As federally qualified health centers, the CHCs operate on a sliding fee scale to ensure care for vulnerable populations. Services include preventive care, chronic disease management, Express Care, Mobile Health, and integrated specialty and behavioral health services. The team consists of dedicated healthcare professionals passionate about making a difference in the community.

Responsibilities

• Greet clients/patients at reception; assist with completing documents, answering questions, and providing information.
• Interview clients/patients to gather basic health-related information (e.g., health status, living conditions, diet, residency, mobility, parenting skills, healthcare needs).
• Register clients/patients using computer systems; obtain/verify patient demographic information; monitor behavior in the waiting room.
• Obtain medical history and chief complaint, including allergies; assist with patient ambulation and transfer; maintain medical charts and schedule appointments.
• Perform routine medical data clerical tasks (e.g., typing, data input, filing, answering phones); inventory and obtain medical/office supplies.
• Verify patient health insurance coverage; contact insurers to verify eligibility/authorization for treatment; refer uninsured patients to Admissions and Collections Clerk; record payments for clinic visits.
• Submit treatment authorization requests into the EPIC database; check requests for completeness; follow up on status.
• Record information for each patient encounter, such as medical procedures and diagnostic tests performed by licensed personnel.
• Prepare patients for examination (positioning, draping, shaving, disinfecting treatment sites); collect and record patient data (height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, and basic medical history).
• Perform routine clinical procedures, including:
  • Taking vital signs.
  • Administering medications (oral, sublingual, topical, vaginal, rectal, inhalation, immunizations, subcutaneous injections) or providing a single dose for self-administration.
  • Performing simple or automated visual testing; obtaining (but not interpreting) results.
  • Removing sutures or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations.
  • Performing phlebotomy for blood draw or transfusion (with phlebotomy certification), as directed.
• Perform ear lavage to remove impacted cerumen; assist with collection of non-invasive specimens (urine, sputum, semen, stool).
• Perform basic screening tests (e.g., electrocardiogram, visual acuity) and CLIA-waived laboratory tests (occult blood, ovulation tests, pregnancy, sedimentation rates, hemoglobin, urinalysis, glucose screening).
• Process physician orders (laboratory, x-ray, EKG) and schedule same-day tests/appointments; ensure diagnostic tests are received prior to patient visits.
• Screen for eligibility for participation in health programs; assess client/patient progress and adherence to health recommendations.
• Provide feedback to licensed professional staff regarding client needs and community responses to health services; conduct information sessions on good health practices and available services.
• Make referrals to licensed professional staff.

Requirements

Option I

• Completion of a certification program in medical assisting.
• Completion of a Medical Assistant certification program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or from an institution accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) is preferred.

Option II

• High school graduation or attainment of a satisfactory G.E.D. score.
• One year of experience performing front office/back office support duties as a medical assistant in a physician’s office, hospital, health center, or other healthcare setting.

All Options

• Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Relevant medical terminology.
• Basic patient care and administrative techniques.
• Medical assisting skills, materials, and equipment related to outpatient care.
• Methods of conducting or assisting with basic tests and treatments in an ambulatory care clinic.
• Basic needs and problems of disadvantaged groups; causes and treatment of medical/public health problems.

• Establish and maintain good relations with diverse social and ethnic groups, professional staff, and community members.
• Obtain and record accurate patient information; perform routine clinical procedures.
