About the Role

The BIDHC Greater Brookline Float pool is a team that consists of Medical Assistants and Practice Assistants who deliver requested coverage to Beth Israel Deaconess HealthCare practices. The Float Pool is designed to efficiently and cost-effectively fill-in staff while maintaining extraordinary patient care. Float Pool positions are considered full time or part time, benefit-eligible positions. The Greater Brookline practices include locations in Boston, Brookline, Newton, Chestnut Hill, and Jamaica Plain.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a communication resource by asking appropriate questions, solving problems, and taking complete and accurate information from patients in person and by phone, prioritizing and communicating the information to providers appropriately.
  • Responds quickly and courteously to phone calls and requests, seeking assistance from supervisor and others as needed.
  • Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms, ensuring availability of x-rays, lab slips, medical records, and other pertinent information.
  • Obtains vitals (weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature), performs EKGs, injections, phlebotomy, and assists providers.
  • Performs departmental screening, lab tests, and specimen collection, implementing quality control standards.
  • Provides patients with relevant instructions for specific tests and procedures.
  • Performs or assists with routine procedures under proper supervision as directed by a physician or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Schedules follow-up tests and appointments, and arranges patient transport as needed.
  • Sorts and distributes lab results daily to the appropriate physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and assists with procuring medical records.
  • Ensures patient records and relevant documents are filed with appropriate identification and adds new medications to the patient record in the EMR system.
  • Assembles records according to BIDHC/APG policy and JCAHO standards.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies necessary for patient care are available, usable, and the environment is clean and organized.
  • Maintains an unobstructed area for patient access, cleans rooms after patient usage, and ensures proper disposal of contaminated materials.
  • Tracks, orders, and maintains supplies and equipment, restocking as needed.
  • Participates in practice improvement initiatives and completes annual APG Medical Assistant Competency Training.
  • Ensures PHI (Patient Health Information) is used only for patient TPO (treatment, payment, and operations) and shared only with individuals actively managing the patient’s care.
  • Ensures patient safety practices to prevent or eliminate risk of harm, reporting adverse events and near misses promptly to APG Risk Management.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Certificate 1 Medical Assistant Certificate required.
  • 0-1 years of related work experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Experience with computer systems, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant.

  • Age-Based Competencies: Competency in providing patient care to all age groups: Neonatal (birth to 6 months), Youth (6 months to 16 years), Young Adult (16-30 years), Middle Age (30-60 years), and Elderly (60+).

Physical Demands

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. The job is physical, requiring standing and/or moving around for the majority of the shift.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $28.26 per hour. Actual compensation is determined based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, and other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices.
