About the Role

The Medical Assistant is accountable for assisting providers in both front and back office procedures, serving as a direct liaison between provider and patient to address any questions or concerns. This position may float to various sites within the health system. In a Medical Home practice setting, the Medical Assistant will be an integral part of the patient's care team, working closely with providers and nurses. Responsibilities include reviewing medications, goal setting, patient education, tracking and coordinating test results, and reminding patients of overdue health maintenance topics.

Responsibilities

• Escort patients from the waiting room to examination rooms promptly.
• Take vital signs according to guidelines.
• Maintain stock in examination rooms.
• Document all patient communications.
• Prepare lab specimens for processing.
• Complete referral forms and obtain authorizations; keep records of referrals.
• Schedule patients for tests.
• Place and receive phone calls in order of importance; file into patient charts.
• Administer treatments and medications per provider order in accordance with established policies.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
• Collect demographic, clinical, and financial information accurately in person or via telephone.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, including third-party reimbursement requirements.

For Departments 530244, 515284, and 515322 Only:

• Apply, medicate, repair, and fit a wide variety of casts, splints, and braces to all areas of the body.
• Apply casts/splints per physician direction using appropriate materials and positioning.
• Fit casts, splints, and braces for maximum comfort and avoid unnecessary pressures.
• Trim, split, and remove casts as required.
• Adjust braces to physician specifications.
• Perform documentation and patient education related to casts, splints, or braces.
• Provide cast care and brace instructions.
• Fit and instruct on crutches and other mobilization aids.
• Prepare, stock, and clean exam rooms; maintain tools and equipment.
• Stock exam rooms, inventory specialty items, and reorder supplies as needed.
• Set up fluoroscopy machines for provider use.
• Contact vendors about brace orders.
• Coordinate with patients to complete workups.
• Complete forms prior to physician review.
• Assist in Operating Room, Inpatient units, and Emergency Room as needed.
• Assist physicians with application of splints, casts, and braces.
• Modify or split casts as needed.
• Instruct patients on cast care, brace/splint application, and care.

Requirements

• Working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking.
• Multi-physician office practice experience highly preferred.
• Current State of Nevada license for Office Laboratory Assistant or Certified Laboratory Assistant (or application submitted within 90 days of employment for most departments). Failure to obtain within 90 days will result in discharge.
• Current AHA BLS certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain one of the following certifications preferred:
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – NHA
  • Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) – AMCA
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – AAMA
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – NCCT
  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – NAHP
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AMT or AAH
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)
  • State of Nevada EMT certification (basic, advanced, paramedic)
• Computer skills necessary to complete online learning, access forms/policies, and complete online benefits enrollment within 90 days.
