Medical Assistant - Outpatient General Surgery - Full Time
About the role
At Elliot General Surgery, we specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions such as diverticulitis, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, hernias, heartburn (GERD), hemorrhoids, and more. Our board-certified general surgeon performs both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive procedures like robotic surgery.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepares visit charts based on daily scheduled appointments, ensuring diagnostic test results, emergency/urgent care reports, discharge summaries, and consult/PCP reports are accessible to the provider.
- Performs rooming activities for provider visits, documenting chief complaints, allergies, vital signs, medication lists, tobacco histories, last menstrual period (LMP), and health maintenance overrides in a timely and accurate manner.
- Accurately measures patients, including vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, peak flow, and pulse oximetry.
- Conducts and documents hearing, vision, respiratory, and ECG tests.
- Conducts and documents specific screenings based on patient needs, including depression and asthma.
- Collects and documents specimens using appropriate collection processes and equipment.
- Administers medications and immunizations, including oral, nasal, injectable, rectal, and topical routes, as appropriate.
- Processes medication prescription refills using telephonic, electronic, or print methods, and handles prior authorization processes for medications and/or procedures.
- Manages clinical supplies and medication sample areas to ensure stock is current, stored appropriately, labeled, and par levels are maintained.
Education/Experience/Licensure
- MA I:
- HS Diploma or GED required.
- One of the following educational paths:
- Graduate from an accredited MA Program.
- Graduate from an MA Training Program with externship.
- 1 year of relevant healthcare experience with formal training (LNA, EMT, Combat Medic).
- 1 year prior experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Experience: 1 year of relevant healthcare experience (can include externship), 1 - 2 years in a clinical ambulatory care setting preferred.
- Certification/Licensure: Must possess BLS authorization upon 90 days of employment and maintain during employment. CMA, RMA, or CCMA preferred.
- MA II:
- HS Diploma or GED required.
- One of the following educational paths:
- Graduate from an accredited MA Program.
- Graduate from an MA Training Program with externship.
- At least 3 years’ experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Experience: At least 3 years’ experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Certification/Licensure: CMA, RMA, or CCMA required. Must possess BLS authorization upon 90 days of employment and maintain during employment.
