Medical Assistant Orthopedic Surgery

This position is located at the Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix. The team treats all injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system using advanced surgical and minimally invasive techniques to reduce pain and restore mobility.
Responsibilities
- Room patients, take vitals, assist with procedures, and update patient electronic medical records accurately and timely.
- Provide direct patient care including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs.
- Act as chaperone as needed and use universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment.
- Prioritize patient flow through the clinical process and coordinate patient care including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling.
- Communicate test results to patients and act as a resource to clinicians to provide optimal patient care.
- Administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
- Provide clerical support including patient notifications, documentation of labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records, and previous care pertaining to each patient visit.
- Provide complete and accurate information necessary for billing related to the patient encounter in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas; disinfect equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions following sterilization procedures.
- Follow manufacturer’s recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling hazardous substances; perform basic maintenance of equipment and coordinate needed maintenance for prompt repairs.
- Order supplies as directed, stock patient care areas, and manage medication ordering and tasks related to all medications (e.g., expired medications/equipment and recalls).
- Develop and maintain effective communication with all external and internal customers; exemplify service orientation and team concept in all contacts.
- Complete all necessary onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training as needed or directed.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
- Active Medical Assistant Certification required, meeting Meaningful Use requirements.
- BLS certification required.
- Acceptable certifications include: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with current AMT membership; Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with current AAMA membership; Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with current NHA membership (tests administered after 7/1/2017 only); or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with current NCCT membership.
- Strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion.
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with office medical procedures and treatments.
- Knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
- Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
