Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Medical Assistant I (MA I) provides clinical care and performs clerical duties to support office/clinic functions. This role is responsible for the application and removal of all types of casts, splints, and braces. You will receive workplace education and training to assist providers and the healthcare team in the care of patients.
Responsibilities
- Escorts patients to examination rooms, takes and records vital signs such as blood pressures, temperatures, height, weight, etc.
- Collects and documents patient health status, history, and monitors patient progress following standard procedures.
- Assists in performing routine clinical procedures.
- Performs cast work for arms, hands, legs, body casts, bi-valve casts, corrective casts, cast wedging, brace molding, and splinting with plaster and fiberglass materials.
- Instructs patients in cast care.
- Applies and adjusts orthopedic leg and arm braces, canes, crutches, and prefabricated fracture braces.
- Instructs patients in gait training.
- Assists with the setup and application for procedures such as pin removal, wound debridement, dressing changes, and suture removals.
- Assists physician/APP with surgical procedures utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques.
- Provides clear, timely communication to the appropriate licensed clinician regarding observations and changes reported in patient per office/clinic guidelines.
- Sets up/prepares rooms based on patient care requirements.
- Assists in the setup, maintenance, disassembly, and cleaning of patient equipment.
- Ensures instruments and scopes are cleaned, sterilized, and repackaged per office/clinic protocol.
- Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients as directed following policy standards.
- Utilizes proper safety techniques and body mechanics in all work-related activities.
- Follows procedures for arriving patients and scheduling appointments.
- Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge/checkout procedures.
- Maintains assigned office and/or clinical supplies, ensuring accurate inventory based on approved levels.
- Rotates stock as required and initiates requisitions for re-supply or special items.
- Maintains logs, organizes patient care charts, and/or maintains medical records.
- May enter data or retrieve medical information from the electronic medical record.
- Performs a variety of clerical duties per office/clinic protocol such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, generating letters, form preparation, and handling phone calls.
- Collaborates with insurers to verify coverage, eligibility, prior authorizations for procedures, medications, and tests as needed.
- Follows guidelines established by insurers to ensure pre-authorization, pre-certification, and clinician referrals for treatment are obtained prior to patient visits.
- Collects co-payments from patients for visits and maintains records.
- Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
- Participates in Quality Improvement initiatives in daily operations.
- Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

- Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
- Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Medical Assistant credential approved by the Massachusetts Department of Health (e.g., ARMA, NHA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Heart Saver (HS) certification from the American Heart Association. If not available upon hire, must be obtained within 3 months from date of hire.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- 40 hours per week
- Day Shift (8 hours)
Pay
Hiring range: $19.32 - $39.34 per hour. This position may have a signing bonus available; eligibility will be confirmed during the interview process.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
- Work is primarily indoors in a patient care office or clinic environment.
- Requires hand dexterity, hearing, and vision ability to take direction, adjust equipment, and observe patient conditions.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Work involves standing and walking most of the time, with frequent bending and the possibility of pushing heavy equipment.
