Medical Assistant, Oncology - Full-Time, Days

This position is a 100% onsite opportunity in the greater Chicagoland area. Our oncology clinics provide comprehensive cancer care for adult patients across a wide range of cancer types and treatments, including palliative care to enhance quality of life throughout treatment and beyond.

About the role

A Medical Assistant at UCM Care Network performs a wide variety of patient care services under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, mid-level provider, or physician in an office setting.

Responsibilities

• Patient Care: Check schedules and organize patient flow; accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms; assist with walking, transfers, dressing, and specimen collection (including drawing blood if required); prepare patients for exams; collect patient history; perform screenings per provider guidelines; assist with procedures; chart; relay instructions to patients/families; answer calls and provide pertinent information.
• Clerical Duties: Send/receive patient medical records; obtain lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information; complete forms/requisitions; schedule appointments; verify insurance coverage and patient demographics; collect co-pays and document receipt (if required); manage and update charts.
• Environmental Duties: Set up instruments and equipment; clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between visits; maintain infection control; clean sterilizer and keep records; order, sort, store, and restock supplies.
• Organizational Duties: Respect and promote patient rights; respond to emergency codes; report problems relating to patients or staff to a supervisor.
• Clinical Medical Assisting: Perform duties varying by state law, including:
  • Medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping, and autoclaving.
  • Check vital signs, prepare for physical examinations, and assist with clinical pharmacology.
  • Administer drugs via various routes, including injections (e.g., immunizations).
  • Verify prescriptions with physician’s orders; assist with minor surgery, including tray set-up, pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal.
  • Dispose of biohazard waste and monitor compliance; apply therapeutic modalities.
  • Instruct patients on assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care.
  • Perform laboratory procedures following OSHA guidelines, quality control methods, and CLIA-waived testing.
  • Conduct capillary punctures, venipunctures, and handle specimens (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum).
  • Perform electrocardiography, including mounting, emergency triage, and first aid.

  Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of a certified program for Medical Assistants.
• Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
• Phlebotomy training; Phlebotomist license and work experience, if required by practice.
• Minimum of one year of recent experience working in a medical office/facility.
• Experience with practice specialty.
• Able to partner with teams in small to large practice groups.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong verbal communication, prioritization, and organizational skills.
• Ability to maintain an organized, alphabetized filing system.
• Working knowledge of PC applications: Excel, Microsoft Word for Windows, and EPIC.
• Experience with computerized appointment scheduling.
• Ability to handle stress in a fast-paced environment.
• Skill in handling sensitive public contacts with discretion, tact, and courtesy.
• Physical ability to perform stocking, lifting, and transporting supplies and instruments.

Schedule

Full-time, 1.0 FTE. Shift: Days, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Pay

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation. The pay range reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected for this position, based on full-time employment (1.0 FTE) and current market data. Compensation at hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
