Banner Health · Mesa, AZ · 1 mo ago
On-siteHealthcareFull-time

Primary location: Mesa, Arizona – Maternal Fetal Medicine department at Banner Desert Medical Center and Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (University Medicine Women’s Institute).

About the role

The Medical Assistant is an integral part of the patient experience, delivering excellent customer service and clinical care. You will alternate between direct patient support—rooming patients, taking vitals, assisting with procedures, and updating electronic medical records—and administrative duties such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, managing referrals, ordering supplies, and stocking rooms.

Uncertified Medical Assistants are welcome; Banner provides study materials and covers the cost of national certification within 12 months of hire, with a pay increase upon passing. The role offers career growth through a Medical Assistant career ladder and tuition assistance for further education (e.g., transitioning to PTR or RN).

This full-time, day-shift position (Monday–Friday, 8 am–5 pm) supports Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) with tasks including vitals, patient intakes, FMLA paperwork, and patient calls. Travel between Banner Desert (Mesa) and Banner University Medical Center Phoenix may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for exams and treatments by recording vitals, symptoms, measurements, and chief complaints; document pain scores as needed.
  • Report patient condition changes to clinicians and assist with exams/minor in-office procedures (e.g., blood pressure, respiration, pulse, temperature, phlebotomy, ear irrigation, EKGs).
  • Act as a chaperone when required and adhere to universal precautions and PPE protocols.
  • Prioritize and manage patient flow through clinical processes, including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic/hospital/ancillary services.
  • Communicate test results to patients and act as a resource for clinicians to optimize care.
  • Administer medications per established policies or clinician direction.
  • Provide clerical support: patient notifications, documentation (labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records), and accurate billing information for encounters.
  • Maintain a clean, functional environment: disinfect equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas following OSHA guidelines and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance, coordinate repairs, order supplies, and manage medication-related tasks (e.g., expired medications, recalls).
  • Develop and maintain effective communication with internal/external stakeholders, exemplifying service orientation and teamwork.
  • Complete onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Completion of an approved medical assistant training program (state-regulated).
  • Active Medical Assistant certification (e.g., RMA, CMA, CCMA, NCMA) with current membership from AMT, AAMA, NHA, or NCCT (post-7/1/2017 test dates for CCMA).
  • BLS certification.
  • Strong computer skills, including medical software proficiency.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple changing priorities effectively.

Employees in behavioral health clinical settings serving children must obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and sign an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with medical office procedures, treatments, insurance/managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
  • Additional related education/experience.

Benefits

  • $80 allowance for scrubs.
  • Tuition assistance and career advancement opportunities (e.g., Medical Assistant career ladder, RN pathways).
  • No weekend shifts.
