About the Role

Reports to the Practice Manager or Team Leader, the Medical Assistant provides clinical support to physicians and mid-level providers. Responsibilities include instructing patients as directed by providers, ensuring compliance with OSHA/CLIA and HIPAA regulations, and completing duties vital to business operations.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms, interview patients, measure vital signs (weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature), and document all information in patients’ charts.
  • Document appropriate patient history in patients’ charts.
  • Provide clear direction to patients, address concerns about exams, and document appropriately.
  • Prepare patients for exams and assist providers during examinations.
  • Perform nursing procedures under provider supervision.
  • Provide instructions to patients as directed by providers.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, perform basic laboratory tests, and administer medications as directed.
  • Ensure all patient chart information is complete and accurate.
  • Complete forms vital to the revenue cycle (e.g., verification/clarification of orders, waivers for non-covered services, encounter forms).
  • Maintain adequate supplies in exam rooms and workstations.
  • Clean and disinfect exam rooms; perform cleaning, maintenance, and sterilization of equipment and instruments.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Maintain logs and required checks (e.g., refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid changes).
  • Assist with patient requests and handle telephone messages for patients, providers, and pharmacies.
  • Triage and process messages from patients and front office staff to providers.
  • Complete referral processes, outpatient test scheduling, and precertification.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing/distribution of patient information.
  • Interact with the Central Billing Office to resolve patient issues.
  • If working as a scribe, follow scribing guidelines as described in the Scribe policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator or Practice Manager.

Requirements

Requirements vary by practice and may include any or all of the following clinical duties:

  • Obtaining vital signs (manual blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature)
  • Assisting providers with exams and procedures
  • Administering injections and immunizations
  • Performing EKGs and other essential laboratory procedures
  • Collecting patient samples (fingerstick, throat/nose swabs, urine)
  • Answering and triaging patient phone calls and questions

Qualifications

  • Minimum: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Must meet one of the following:
    • 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant (MA), CNA, PCA, STNA, or SEH Clinical Care Tech
    • Completion of an MA Program and MA Externship
    • Completion of SEP MA Internship
    • Completion of EMT Certification Program
    • Degree in Health or Biological Sciences inclusive of hands-on clinical patient care activities

Licenses and Certifications

Preferred: An approved credential, such as CCMA, CMA, RMA, ARMA, or EMT.

Non-exempt FLSA status.
