About the role

This position is responsible for assisting clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care, implementing and evaluating direct patient care, and utilizing specialized knowledge and skills to ensure an excellent patient experience. The role operates in a fast-paced environment with multiple providers and involves rooming patients, checking vitals, contacting patients, answering questions, and stocking patient care areas.

At Banner Medical Group, you'll perform a critical role in the community, working in settings ranging from smaller group practices to large multi-specialty centers. The team is open to considering uncertified medical assistants with at least one year of experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other measurements, and documenting the chief complaint, including pain scores as appropriate.
• Reports changes in patient condition to the clinician.
• Assists providers with exams and minor in-office procedures, including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs.
• Acts as a chaperon as needed.
• Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment as required.
• Prioritizes patient flow through the clinical process.
• Coordinates and manages patient care, including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary medical treatments.
• Communicates test results to patients.
• Acts as a resource to clinicians to provide optimal patient care.
• Administers medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
• Provides clerical support, including patient/client notifications and documentation, such as completing medical records (labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records, and previous care).
• Ensures complete and accurate billing information for patient encounters in a timely manner.
• Maintains a clean, functional environment, including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas.
• Disinfects equipment and instruments following sterilization procedures and OSHA guidelines for handling hazardous substances.
• Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates repairs as needed.
• Orders and stocks supplies for patient care areas.
• Manages medication ordering and related tasks, including handling expired medications/equipment and recalls.
• Develops and maintains effective communication with all external and internal customers, exemplifying service orientation and teamwork.
• Completes all necessary onboarding and orientation activities, including simulation training as directed.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
• Active Medical Assistant Certification is required. Certification must meet Meaningful Use requirements and include one of the following:
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (test administered after 7/1/2017 only).
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT).
• BLS certification required.
• Strong computer skills, including experience with medical software.
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized manner.
• Employees working in behavioral health clinical settings serving children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with office medical procedures, treatments, and knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
• Additional related education and/or experience.
