Responsibilities

• Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data.
• Identifies abnormal patient findings and communicates them to the provider or RN.
• Assists provider in setting up for procedures including aseptic and sterile techniques; provides safe administration of medications and immunizations; obtains EKGs; and schedules specialty and follow-up appointments.
• Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures, and other medically related tasks.
• Assists in the coordination of clerical information necessary to provide patient care, including referrals, appointment arrangements, and faxing of medical information.
• Maintains patient medical record and ensures patient confidentiality.
• Aids in the preparation of exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies, prepares and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment, and restocks exam and treatment rooms.
• Maintains a safe environment by practicing sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures.
• Engages in performance appraisal and participates in competency reviews.
• Performs phlebotomy and performs various laboratory procedures after competency verification.

Requirements

• Completion of a clinical Medical Assistant training program resulting in a diploma or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification, or a registered apprentice program certificate.
• Completion of a 160-hour externship.
• Required or 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting.
• One year of experience working in school-age student services, preferred.
• BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA or American Red Cross certification.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical office practice.
• Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
• Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
• Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed.
• Skill in taking vital signs.
• Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians, and the public.
• Ability to maintain quality control standards.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
• Ability to communicate clearly.
• Bilingual skills preferred.
• Ability to learn and be proficient in electronic health record documentation.
• Utilize equipment and technology safely to provide patient care, upon completion of training and competency for applicable clinical area.
