About the role

The Medical Assistant Certified provides and ensures patients receive whole care in all aspects of an office visit, focusing on patient-centered care. Responsibilities include intake, test results, screenings, labs, medication administration, and closure of care gaps while delivering excellent customer service to patients, families, and other care providers.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and performs point of care testing such as urine dipstick, blood glucose, etc.
  • Performs clinical intake to include vital signs, medical history, surgical history, social history, and verification of patient’s current medications.
  • Arranges and administers medications as ordered by provider utilizing the “6 Rights” of Medication Administration, including documentation and coding. Controlled substances, insulin, and allergy doses must be checked by an LPN, RN, or Licensed Practitioner.
  • Assists in stocking and ordering supplies, maintains equipment, and coordinates medical supply ordering with the site manager.
  • Sets up patients for examination and prepares pre-work for providers, including notes, diagnostic test results, and imaging.
  • Performs point of care testing and/or specimen collection as directed by the provider.
  • Tracks and communicates lab and diagnostic study results to patients as directed by the provider through phone calls, portal messages, or EMR buckets.
  • Communicates abnormal findings to Licensed Practitioners and completes accurate documentation.
  • Follows safety processes and policies, including infection prevention procedures, maintaining a clean environment and equipment.
  • Completes and documents adverse events, infection control, and quality control measures as required.
  • Complies with office policy and procedure, OSHA Standards, and HIPAA Privacy Regulations.
  • Delivers excellent customer service to patients, families, and other care providers.
  • Maintains patient flow and discusses it with Licensed Practitioners according to urgency and daily patient load.
  • Provides coverage in other areas of Health First Medical Group (HFMG) or office to support departmental needs, including patient registration, payment collections, checkout, and appointment scheduling.
  • Answers internal and external customer phone calls and directs messages appropriately.
  • Ensures all documentation is complete and recorded in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Acts as a liaison between support services and other clinical divisions.
  • Provides customer follow-up and education to ensure patient participation in their care, respecting individual needs, expectations, age, culture, and differences.
  • Adjusts communications to meet the customer’s needs and expectations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical Diploma in Medical Assisting.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification from one of the following accredited organizations:
    • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
    • American Medical Technologist (AMT)
    • National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
    • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
    • American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
    • National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
    • American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained.
  • Work Experience In Lieu of Education: With no Technical Diploma, six (6) months or more in related clinical experience.
  • If hired into Memory Disorder Clinic or Health First Aging: Satisfy the State of Florida, Agency for Healthcare Administration (ACHA) Level 2 background screening.

Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Must pass colorblind testing to perform point-of-care (POC) tests requiring color change.
  • Strong customer service skills, including knowledge of recovery techniques.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Ability to assist more than one provider at a time.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically agile; may require walking, standing, running, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching frequently.
  • May occasionally include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
  • May require moving in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces, reaching out and above shoulders, or overhead.
  • May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without assistance up to 90% of the assigned shift.
  • May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting, and/or low to loud noise.
  • May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles following OSHA and CDC guidelines.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
  • Workspace may vary from open to confined.
  • May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
