Responsibilities
- Assists physician in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient needs during examinations, treatments and emergency situations.
- Affixes diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, ensuring procedures are provided in a safe, clean, competent manner/environment.
- Maintains a clean, safe, well-stocked patient care area, including patient examination rooms.
- Administers oral, rectal, subcutaneous, and intra-muscular medications and/or injections.
- Maintains a complete, accurate, legible medical record reflecting the patient's condition, medication, treatment, and any other pertinent information relevant to total patient care according to professional standards and procedures.
- Provides telephone triage/communication, calls in prescriptions, orders diagnostic studies as defined by protocol or per physician instructions.
- Thoroughly educates and explains procedures to patients and family members, and assists them in coping with illnesses and hospitalizations under the direction of the physician.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding patient and business functions of the office.
- Demonstrates a positive customer service-oriented attitude/behavior.
- Functions independently and assumes responsibility for actions in clinical procedures in accordance with ability and training after clinical ability has been demonstrated and documented.
- Maintains a working knowledge of business office protocol/procedures.
- Aids in identifying methods of improving patient care.
- Seeks out and pursues educational opportunities.
- Obtains continuing education units to maintain certification or registration as a Medical Assistant.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.
- Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
- Transferring, repositioning patients.
- Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeing, and crouching for patient care functions.
- Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.
- Optimal auditory acuity required.
- Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties.
- Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
- Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an approved school for Medical Assistants.
- Work Experience: Two years experience in a physician office setting.
- Ability to make decisions and initiate action under stress and in critical situations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Skills
- Current CPR certification.
- Current Certification or Registration as a Medical Assistant.
- Successful completion of St. Dominic Medication Administration Review and Examination within one month of employment.
